Decking that stays flat and stays safe

Decking is a frame with boards on top, and almost everything that goes wrong with it goes wrong in the frame. Joists spaced too far apart give you bounce. No ventilation underneath gives you rot. No fall on the surface gives you standing water and, by the second winter, something slippery to walk on.

We design and build timber decking across Norwich and Norfolk, from a simple ground-level platform outside a back door to raised decks with steps and balustrade. Sustainably sourced, pressure-treated timber throughout, built on a frame that is set out properly before a single board goes down.

Ground-level decks

The most common job: a level platform off the back of the house, usually to replace a tired patio or to make sense of a lawn that never drains. Built on a treated frame clear of the soil with airflow underneath, set with a slight fall so water runs off rather than sitting in the grain.

Raised decks, steps and balustrade

Where the ground drops away, a raised deck buys you a level, usable garden at the same height as the house. These need more thought: posts down to firm ground, a frame designed for the span, and steps and balustrade built to a sensible height and spacing. We build the whole thing as one structure rather than bolting a handrail onto a platform afterwards.

Board choice and finish

Smooth or grooved, and laid in the direction that suits the space. Grooved boards are often sold as anti-slip, though in practice the grooves mostly help water run off, and how a deck is positioned and how much sun it gets matters more. We will talk through board options and lay-out at the quote so you know what you are getting.

Ground preparation

Whatever is there now usually has to come out first, and the ground has to be levelled, cleared and made stable. Old slabs, roots, a rotten previous deck: we handle the clearance as part of the job and take it away under our waste carrier licence.
