Gates made, hung and made to keep working

A gate is the part of a fence that has to move, which is why it is almost always the part that fails first. Sagging, dragging on the ground, a latch that no longer lines up: all of it comes from a gate that was too heavy for its hardware or hung on a post that was never braced for the load.

We make timber gates to measure and hang them properly, from a side gate on a narrow passage to a five-bar gate across a driveway. Made in sustainably sourced timber, braced correctly, and hung on ironmongery chosen for the actual weight of the gate.

Side and garden gates

The everyday gate: pedestrian width, matched to the fence it sits in so it reads as part of the run rather than an afterthought. We can make it to match close-board, panel or picket fencing, with or without a lock, and hang it to open whichever way the space allows.

Driveway and double gates

Double gates need to meet cleanly in the middle and still do so in five years. That means seriously braced hanging posts, set deep and in the right ground, and hinges rated for the leaf weight. We make them in matching pairs with a drop bolt into the ground and a catch that lines up, and we will talk you through opening in, opening out, and where the gates will sit when they are open.

Five-bar and field gates

The traditional five-bar gate, in timber, hung on a proper heel post. Suits a rural driveway, a paddock entrance or a track, and looks right in a Norfolk setting in a way that a metal gate does not. Braced diagonally from the hanging side so the weight is carried correctly.

Bracing and ironmongery

The diagonal brace on a timber gate has to run from the bottom of the hinge side upwards, so it works in compression and pushes the weight back into the post. Get it the wrong way round and the gate is hanging off a joint. It is a small detail that decides whether the gate still shuts properly next winter, and it is one of the first things we look at when we are called out to fix somebody else's gate.
