Trellises

Trellis earns its keep twice, adding privacy without the solid wall of a full-height fence, and giving climbers something to get hold of. We make it to measure, so it fits the run it is going on instead of leaving you with an awkward cut panel at the end. Fitted on top of existing fencing to gain height, or as standalone screening to divide up a garden.

Screening that does not feel like a wall

Trellis solves the problem where you want a bit more privacy but not another foot of solid fence. It breaks a sight line, gives a climber something to get hold of, and lets light and air through instead of casting the whole border into shade.

We make trellis and garden screening to measure and install it across Norwich and Norfolk, either as panels on top of an existing fence or as freestanding screens dividing one part of a garden from another.

Trellis on top of fencing

Adding a trellis topper is the usual way to gain height on a boundary without the fence becoming an oppressive slab. It also matters structurally: an open top takes far less wind load than a solid one, which is easier on the posts. We fit the topper into the existing post line where the posts are sound, or replace posts with taller ones where they are not.

Freestanding screens

Inside a garden, a screen does the useful job of hiding the bins, the oil tank or the compost heap, or of dividing a seating area off from the rest of the lawn without walling it in. Built as a proper framed structure on its own posts, so it stands on its own and does not lean on a hedge.

Patterns and spacing

Square lattice, diagonal lattice, or a contemporary slatted screen with a wide, even gap. Diagonal reads as traditional, square is quieter and disappears behind planting more readily, and horizontal slats sit well with a modern extension. All are made to measure, so the pattern stays even to the end of the run.

Built for climbers

If the point of the trellis is to grow something up it, it needs to be fixed with a gap behind it so air can get round the plant and so you can get at the fence to maintain it. We fix on battens rather than flat against the boards for exactly that reason.

Where we work

We are based in Brundall, just east of Norwich, and cover the city and the surrounding villages — including Hethersett, Wymondham, Cringleford, Eaton and Cringleford. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call Nick on 07377 222997 and he will tell you straight away. Every quote is free and comes with no obligation.

Common questions

Can trellis be added to my existing fence?
If the posts are sound, yes, and it is a cost-effective way to gain height. If the posts are already at their limit or starting to go, adding height and wind load to them is a false economy. Nick will check the posts before quoting.
How much extra height can I add?
There are limits on boundary fence height, and the trellis counts towards it. Most gardens have room for a topper within those limits, but it depends what the fence is already. We will work it out with you on site.
Will it be strong enough for a climber?
Made-to-measure trellis on a proper frame will carry a normal garden climber comfortably. A heavy, woody, long-lived climber is a bigger load and we would build accordingly, so it is worth saying what you plan to grow.
Can you paint or stain it?
Yes. Trellis takes colour well and a dark stain makes it recede visually, which is usually what you want behind planting. Mention it at the quote so we can prepare the timber properly.
